Cameron Phinizee, indicted for the murder of 13-year-old Ryland Calvert, was in court on Thursday.

Calvert was shot and killed during what investigators say was a robbery in March 2025.

Investigators believe Phinizee and Calvert were attempting to rob a man at an apartment complex when the shooting happened.

They say the shooter, who has not been identified, arrested or charged, was acting in self-defense.

A grand jury found probable cause to believe that Phinizee is legally responsible for the death of Calvert.

Phinizee was indicted on Felony Murder. He was released on bond with the condition of wearing a GPS ankle monitor.

On August 1, Phinizee applied for youthful offender status since he was 17 years old at the time of the shooting.

In September, a judge denied the application, meaning Phinizee will be tried as an adult.

At this time, his next court appearance has not been determined.
