North Alabama group homes ordered to be shut down
DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) - Multiple north Alabama group homes belonging to a well-known Decatur businessman are now shut down.
Rodney Gordon, the owner of R&R Group Homes, president of the Morgan County NAACP, and an outspoken critic of the city of Decatur, is blaming it all on politics.
Representatives from the Alabama Department of Mental Health shut down the offices and homes of R&R Group Home, Inc. on Wednesday.
R&R Group Homes, owned by Gordon, is an organization that provides programs and services addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities.
They serve children and the elderly.
Now, seven group homes in total are shut down, impacting 65 employees.
Those who were living in the group homes have been moved to other certified homes.
WAFF received a statement from the State Department of Mental Health that this is part of a decertification process for those group homes.
They say R&R Group Homes are in the decertification process.
“During the decertification process, individuals are given the choice to move to other certified settings. As of today, the individuals have been moved to alternate certified provider settings.
“Staff at R&R Group Homes have been cooperative in proceedings related to the decertification process and client transitions. The provider may appeal the decertification process.”
WAFF spoke to Gordon by phone, who said he was cited by the state for fraudulent background checks of employees, which he says is false, and that this is nothing but politics at work.
WAFF is working to get more details regarding the situation, and we’ll update you as soon as we get them.
