Decatur program aims to inspire the next generation of police officers

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) - Police in Decatur are looking to inspire the next generation of officers, starting with students.

The department launched its Explorer Program, a new effort that gives students across the area a firsthand look at life in law enforcement.

That ranges from learning patrol basics to seeing how officers give back.

School resource officers say it’s about more than just the badge.

“We want to get a group of kids who are interested in policing and hopefully when they are of age we can have some kids go through our program and become Decatur police officers,” said school resource officer Rance Sullivan.

Officers say the program is also about teaching responsibility, work ethic, and building stronger connections between the youth and the community.
