JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) - The Jackson County Board of Education voted to close Flat Rock School on Wednesday morning.

The vote was unanimous.

Earlier this month, Superintendent Jason Davidson said the operating costs of the campus are much higher than other county schools due to the building’s age.

Davidson also shared that the cost per student at Flat Rock is significantly higher than other schools that have more students enrolled.

At last check, Flat Rock School only had 64 students enrolled. Just seven were enrolled for grades K-2.

Davidson said earlier this month the discussion of closing the school was centered around a way to better allocate county funds.

Had Flat Rock remained open, Davidson said the school district could have lost out on federal funds because the campus does not meet certain criteria.

During a Board of Education meeting earlier this month, parents expressed concern that their children will be losing their teachers. Concerns were also expressed about bus routes and where current students will go next.
