ALABAMA (WAFF) - Disaster-trained workers with the American Red Cross of Alabama and Mississippi are working with officials after strong storms, tornadoes, and heavy rain ripped through the state on Saturday night.

Damage assessment is beginning in affected communities on Sunday. Red Cross case workers will work with families affected to meet their immediate disaster-caused needs and help people impacted by the storms to recover.

If you need help as a result of the tornadoes and storms, contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS.

The American Red Cross also advises the following safety precautions to take after severe weather:

  • If power lines are down outside your home, don’t step in puddles or standing water. Report them immediately to the power company.
  • If the power is out, use a flashlight. Don’t use any candles or open flames for lighting.
  • If you smell gas or hear a hissing noise, leave the property immediately and get far away from it. Call the fire department after you reach safety.
