Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle declared mayoral winner for fifth term
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle has been declared the mayoral winner in the 2024 municipal election, the city council announced Thursday night.
Mayor Battle will continue to serve as the city’s mayor moving into his fifth term, beginning on Nov. 4.
City officials said the qualifications for the municipal election ended June 25, making Mayor Battle the sole candidate for the mayor’s race.
Mayor Battle was elected Huntsville’s mayor in 2008, winning re-elections in 2012, 2016, 2020 and now in 2024 running unopposed.
According to Alabama law, a City Council shall declare an unopposed municipal candidate as the winner, upon proper certification. The move saves resources and taxpayer dollars because polls do not have to open in unaffected precincts.
“I am humbled and honored at the opportunity to continue serving this great city,” said Mayor Battle. “Council’s action gives us a chance to get a jump start on preparations for the coming term, to meet with our administration and be ready to start out of the gates quickly.”
The municipal election for candidates of City Council and School Board Districts 1 and 5 will be on Aug. 27. For more information, click here.
