AAMU campus police react to sexual assault

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Alabama A&M University campus police are urging students to be on high alert as they continue investigating a sexual assault.
Investigator Dennis Garner with the AAMU Police Department said three masked men wearing hoodies approached a female student shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. He said it happened in the quad area of campus, which is a common place for students to hang out.
Investigators said the men sexually assaulted her and ran away.
"She's traumatized but she's doing fine," Garner said.
Garner said once the student reported the crime, they sent out a campus-wide phone and email alert. They've since received leads on the suspects.
"Since that alert has been put out, we've gotten tips from students about who potential suspects maybe," said Garner. "So that's being followed up on and investigated at this time."
Garner said they've beefed up security and they're also urging students to take extra safety measures while on campus.
"We encourage the students to adopt the buddy system, meaning you walk in pairs, you walk with groups," said Garner. "Always be mindful of your surroundings. Additionally, we encourage them to avoid dark areas on campus."
Garner also encourages students to use the emergency blue light telephones if they feel threatened or need police. They're located outside most of the buildings on campus.
