MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Accused of being "too high" to save their child from fatally ingesting a dishwashing detergent tablet, two Madison County parents were sentenced at a hearing Monday.

Kristopher Speigner pleaded guilty to criminally-negligent homicide Monday afternoon. This comes more than two years after his 19-month-old child swallowed a dishwashing detergent tablet and died.

His wife, Joy Speigner made the same plea Monday morning.

The arrest warrant stated the two were "too high and too drunk" to save the child. Court documents mention the couple didn't call for help until the morning after the child swallowed the toxic substance.

Kristopher and Joy will serve two years probation, along with fines and community service.

Criminally negligent homicide is a Class-A misdemeanor carrying a maximum sentence of a year in jail.
