COLLINSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A foul odor led police in East Alabama to the discovery of several dead and dying dogs.

Surviving dogs have been sent to a safe place after being removed from a home on Gregory Avenue in Collinsville.

Police said they received a call about a very bad smell coming from a home. When they arrived, they said they found some of the worst conditions for animals they have ever seen. Pictures from the scene were so graphic, we elected not to air them or post them online.

Collinsville police said they recovered 27 dogs, which were found in pens located behind the Gregory Avenue house. While eight were in decent shape, 14 were in poor condition. Five dogs were discovered deceased; two of which were only skeletal remains.

Assistant Chief Rex Leath said all of the dogs were taken to the DeKalb County Adoption Center. He said charges are likely in this case.

"The owner of the dogs, just last year, got a warrant on a guy for stealing one of his dogs," said Leath. "It really surprised me with this gentleman. He has some health issues, but there again - he neglected his dogs."

Leith went on to say that one of the dogs collapsed as officers attempted to walk it to a truck. He said he didn't believe all of the dogs would even make it to the shelter.

Leath said warrants for animal cruelty charges will likely be obtained Friday morning.
