2 HPD officers awarded top honor for bravery
MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) - Two Huntsville police officers were awarded the Alabama Law Enforcement Medal of Honor on Thursday by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley.
Officers Jason Moore and Reynard Robinson received the award, the top honor in the state for law enforcement officers for their actions during a standoff with an armed man in April 2014. The ceremony was held during a joint session of the Alabama Legislature.
In April 2014, Huntsville police responded to a fight call on Stanford drive. When officers arrived, police say Moore was shot in the face with a shotgun by William Arthur Stogner. Stogner then barricaded himself inside his home and fired several more shots at officers. A SWAT team responded and returned fire, killing Stogner.
Moore, who has returned to the line of duty, said he was honored for receiving the award, adding he can't believe he is being hailed as a hero.
"I just love helping people," he said.
Awards were also given to other Alabama law enforcement officers.
WAFF 48 was the only Huntsville-area media at the awards ceremony and spoke to Moore and his wife. We will have full coverage on this story this evening at 5 and 6 p.m.
