Decatur public housing gets upgrades to support several new residents
DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) - The Decatur Housing Authority is seeing the most openings it’s had in years. Officials tell WAFF 48 that future residents should expect shorter wait times.
Officials said they are finally fully staffed, and now, after renovations, units are almost ready for their new tenants.
Decatur Housing Authority Executive Director Taura Denmon said the last time there were this many openings was most likely before COVID.
She said future residents should expect much shorter wait times than they’ve had in the past.
She said the long waits they’ve had were because they had few maintenance workers during and shortly after COVID, but they hired some contractors, and now they are fully staffed, and they have been able to make the changes needed to get units ready to rent.
Denmon said they have repainted, replaced outlets, and smoke detectors. Some units have even received new flooring, getting their units back up to high standards.
“We just want to make sure that it meets our standards,” Denmon said.
“Not everywhere you go, the standards are the same. So I think when I first came here, everybody kept saying, you asking for too much? No, I’m really not asking for too much. I’m asking for the same thing that each of us go home to every day.”
Denmon said for anyone who is interested in applying to live in one of their neighborhoods can visit their website, call, or come to an office to pick up an application.
