ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) - Folk fans from all over the Tennessee Valley flocked to Athens State for the Old Time Fiddlers Convention.

Saturday marked the final day of the event, with hundreds of fiddlers showcasing their skills and spectators enjoying the sounds.

Alabama Bluegrass Music Association President Mickey Dooley said you don’t have to be an aficionado to take part.

“These folks, especially the younger kids, now that you got YouTube and places where they can stay at home and learn and hone their talents,” Dooley said.

“They come out here, and they are able to see other people, maybe their same age and a little more advanced. Next year, they come back, and they are a little more advanced. So, it’s a good competitive type of environment. We see a lot of talent, a lot of local talent that comes out.”

The convention crowned 14 different champions across different categories.
