Police say the two men now charged in the Scottsboro officer-involved shooting have no ties
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Daniell Hendon is in the Jackson County Jail for making a false report to Law Enforcement as they hunted attempted murder suspect Daniel McCarn.
Police told WAFF that Hendon submitted an application to a local rug store using McCarn’s name and information on Saturday, as police were searching for McCarn.
In that application, Hendon - again posing as McCarn checked “yes” for being a convicted felon and in the description said, “I just shot a police officer.”
Scottsboro police captain Ryan Putman said that what they’ve found there was absolutely no connection between McCarn and Hendon.
“I don’t know if he felt he wanted to instigate or if he wanted to cause problems for the police department. I don’t know, I can’t answer to what his mentality was. Regardless, it caused a distraction during the course of this manhunt and diverted valuable resources away from it, and we’re not going to tolerate that,” Putman said.
When police saw the application on Saturday, they followed that lead, which led them to a dead end.
After they found McCarn Saturday night, investigators continued to look into this random application.
Following the IP address, officers were led to a local hotel in Scottsboro.
When 48’s Faith Delp spoke to employees there, they told her Hendon had lived there for 4 years and mostly stayed in his room.
They only ever saw him go to the grocery store next door or play video games.
They showed WAFF his room, and it was normal, but the employees said it was the cleanest they had ever seen that room since he had lived there.
His car was left in the parking lot, too.
The employees said police showed up around 11:30 a.m. to arrest him.
Putman said Hendon admitted to what he did almost immediately.
“When he was questioned about it, he admitted to it during interview that he had sent it, doing it as a hoax,” Putman said.
Hendon is being held in the Jackson County Jail on a $7,500 bond.
McCarn is also in the Jackson County Jail on a 10-million-dollar bond and does have a preliminary hearing set for September 3rd.
