Women celebrate their 104th and 101st birthdays at same nursing home
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (WABC) – Two women living in a nursing home outside of New York City got a special birthday celebration on Tuesday – both of them marked triple digits.
While the centenarians both live at Sutton Park Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in New Rochelle, New York, they actually grew up not far from each other in Virginia.
“They enjoy sensory, aromatherapy, spa. They like enjoying their nails and having a little mimosa that we have on the side for them,” Recreation Director Diondra Waller said.
But Tuesday, it was sparkling cider, birthday cake and admiration.
Celebrating her 104th birthday, Katherine Carson was joined by members of her church where she was an active parishioner.
“She always came and said hello to everyone as she walked in the door,” church deacon Alex Smith said. “It’s just a wonderful thing that she’s still here and still clapping and still remembering things of that nature of the church, and that’s a true blessing.”
Martha Jones, once a nanny, was honored for her 100th birthday by her nephew who remembers the barbeque feast she used to make.
“She’s a caring person. She’s very good people, very good,” her nephew Warren Jones said.
There are about 100,000 Americans who are 100 years old or older.
The US Census Bureau expects that number to quadruple by 2054.
