PRICEVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A Morgan County town is putting the finishing
touches on its new alcohol ordinance after voting to go wet last November.
The Priceville Town Council held a public
hearing about the ordinance Tuesday night.
Comments to the council mainly focused on
making tweaks before the ordinance goes into effect.
The Priceville mayor said he sees alcohol
sales as an opportunity to cash in a new revenue source, but he said he doesn't
want to tarnish the community's image either.
He said that's why they're taking feedback
from Priceville residents. A pastor said he'd like to see alcohol licenses be
banned from any place within 300 feet of a church.
Other residents suggested changing the time
alcohol sales are allowed. The current proposal suggests hours be from 6 a.m.
to 11 p.m., but residents had concerns some sporting events might not be over
by that time.
The mayor said the rough draft is a near
carbon copy of Cullman's policies.
"The signs, and the zones, and the setbacks,
we've tried to copy what other people have done because there's no need for us
to reinvent the wheel here," said Mayor Melvin Duran.
"Most of the draft proposal here is really
well done, but there's a few things here that I feel we did not do address and
one of them is draft beer and another is a brew pub," said resident Charlie
Hawkins.
The town plans on having one public meeting
next week to discuss the proposal and any new changes that need to be made
before the town council votes on it.
