A local teacher was arrested on sex charges.

34-year-old Jessica Heather Deforr teaches second grade at Danville Neel Elementary School in Morgan County and lives in Decatur.

Lt. Johnathan Green of the Decatur Police Department said, "The charge is second degree sexual abuse, which is class a misdemeanor."

The charge stems from an incident that allegedly happened two years ago, when the female victim was 14-years-old.

Lt.  Green adds, "The allegation is that Mrs. Defoor had inappropriate contact with this juvenile victim and that she touched her on her upper torso through clothing."

Defoor won't be in the classroom when school starts because she's been placed on administrative leave with pay.

Most residents WAFF 48 News talked with were surprised at such an allegation in their community.

Danville resident, Greg Roman said, " I don't know what to say. I've heard of stuff like that at other places. I didn't think we had it here."

Diane Westmoreland said, "Kids say things sometimes, but I think it should be investigated a little bit further before they condemn her or you know take the child's word."

"You want it to be proven because it can scandal somebody, and they don't need to be in especially an elementary school," adds Randy Booker, a Danville resident.

Defoor has been released on $500 bond.
