HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Mae Jemison High School in Huntsville has a new principal. Dr. Rachael McDaniel comes to Huntsville from south Alabama.
The 3-year-old school has had a different leaders since it opened.
To welcome students and parents back, McDaniel went door-to-door to greet them Thursday.
"If I get em here the first day. I'll get them here the other 179," said McDaniel.
She wants to learn from the past and craft better ways to approach the future. The slogan for this school year is Building a Dynasty. The goal is to achieve consistent success all across the board.
Chaundra Jones is the mom of two Mae Jemison students. She was out with McDaniel as they toured the area.
"We need people in the village to help us raise the village, and so that's what I think a big part of this is all about," said Jones.
Despite the past issues at Jemison, McDaniel wants to look ahead.
"Trust is not easily gained, and I understand why they've lost trust. But give it a chance and instead of losing trust. Come and be on board with what we're trying to do," said McDaniel.
Part of the tour was to invite parents to the school's block party. It's a celebration to kick off the new school year. Local leaders and others will be in attendance. It starts at 1:30 p.m. Monday on the campus.
