LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - WAFF 48 News spoke to Lauderdale County law enforcement officers who tell us teens are the single biggest age group reported as distracted drivers in fatal car crashes.

Lt. Joe Hamilton with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office said young drivers are inexperienced, don't have the ability to handle multiple passengers in the car, have trouble driving at night and avoiding speed, and are more prone to use their cellphones while driving.

"Before leaving, preprogram the radio, GPS, leave the phones alone, no texting, and obey the speed limit," said Hamilton.

He said parents need to remind kids to prepare for their drive ahead of time. Place the phone in the console, turn it off, and lastly, have the other passenger send a text message if it cannot wait.

He said these small tips can help save a life.
