FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - There have been five homicides so far this year in Florence. It's a startling statistic when you consider they average only one or two a year.

Investigator Brad Holmes said violent crimes have been a big problem in Florence and officers are doing everything they can to keep the public safe.

Holmes told WAFF 48 News his homicide team is overworked. He said detectives have logged more than 300 hours' worth of overtime just in the last four months. That's what they usually see in a year.

Holmes said this amount of crime is unusual for Florence, but violence does happen. He said they rely heavily on community tips in these types of cases.

"All of our investigators willingly answer the call after hours when someone commits a violent crime. We continue to be successful because of members of our community coming forward and providing information to our investigators," he said.

Holmes wants to remind the public if you see something, say something. Always contact the Florence Police Department with any information.
