MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) - A Muscle Shoals police officer jumped into action to save a suspect who was drowning after fleeing from police.

Ryan Richardson dove into the water when he heard Ronald Barnett shout that he was drowning, according to our news partners at the Times Daily.

Richardson had been trying to catch Barnett, who reportedly was in a stolen vehicle and was running from police on Saturday. The chase ended when Barnett took off running into a wooded area and jumped into a river near Steenson Hollow.

"He was about 20 to 25 yards out in the slough, and we had been yelling at him about five minutes to come back to shore," said Richardson of the incident.

Richardson retrieved Barnett from the river before he was transported to a hospital. Once he was released, he was arrested. He is now in the Colbert County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree receiving stolen property.
