COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Colbert County engineer John Bedford said winter floods eroded the embankment under the wooden one-lane on King Bridge, which led to the road department to closing it.

Bedford said the bridge needs to be completely replaced because it can't handle anything more than a car or small pickup.

Bedford says repairs would cost the county $87,000, but that still may not totally fix the problem. Bedford thinks it's not worth the risk. He said demolishing the bridge is the best option for the county.

"The bridge is not worth the risk for repairs it was my recommendation to the commission last night that we demolish the bridge which also they agreed," said Bedford.

Demolition of the bridge is set to happen in the winter.
