HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - One North Alabama lawmaker is joining the push to cut out texting and driving in the state.

State Senator Jim McClendon joins Senator Cam Ward in asking for a bill that would make it a crime for you to hold the phone and drive.

He also wants harsher penalties for texting and driving.

These requests come after the heartbreaking story of an Alabaster mother on a mission to tighten the state's distracted driving laws, after losing her daughter who was texting and driving.

The goal is to have the bill ready by March of next year.
