Pedestrian killed in Athens wreck

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) - Athens police confirm there was a fatal accident on U.S. 72 west of Hine Street Wednesday night.

An officer responded just before 9 p.m. to find two wrecks. In the first wreck, a vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing U.S. 72. The pedestrian was killed.

Limestone County Coroner Mike West identified the victim as 54-year-old Robert Toney Jr. of Athens.

Police said that wreck led to other vehicles stopping suddenly, causing a four-vehicle pileup. Police said there wee several injuries but none were life-threatening.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle that struck Toney.
