Rural police chief poised to become next DeKalb County sheriff
DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A rural police chief in DeKalb County is poised to be the next sheriff of DeKalb County.
Valley Head Police Chief Nick Welden edged out Mike Edmondson for the Republican nomination Tuesday night.
Welden said people would tell him they were going to vote for him but that he couldn't win. Welden said that just helped energize his campaign even more.
Welden beat out the current chief deputy of the office who ran after Sheriff Jimmy Harris announced he was stepping down.
"The last month, we had people we had never met in our life that had come to a lot of our events we had that contacted us and wanted to run the last few weeks with us as a ground-driven campaign and that's really what made the difference. We proved that we could bring people together," said Welden.
Welden will face off against Democratic challenger John Baker in November.
