Tanner High School principal fired

TANNER, AL (WAFF) - The Limestone County board of education has terminated Tanner High School Principal Louis Gordon.

The board voted 5-1 for termination Tuesday evening. He will leave once his probation is over next month.


Superintendent Tom Sisk said the decision was "based off what was best for the students." He gave the following statement:

After a principal completes a probationary period, the board of education must decide whether to give that principal a three-year contract or terminate that principal.

Prior to making this decision, we carefully review all available information and viewpoints. The only consideration in making this decision is what is best for the students.

Today, I recommended, and the board approved, the termination of Louis Gordon effective at the end of his probationary period. Based on the information we received, I believe this is the best course of action for the students of Tanner High School.

I wish Mr. Gordon all the best in his future endeavors.

The NAACP sent the following response to the firing:

The action taken by our school Board tonight is inexcusable. We denounce what has just happened here tonight. We were hopeful that our school leaders would have had the decency to do what was morally right and fair tonight, however their decision tonight is blatantly indecent, morally wrong and unfair.  This decision tonight will not go unchallenged.  Our efforts for justice, not only for Mr. Gordon, but for students of Tanner High School and students throughout this school system will only intensify.

Tonight we officially and unequivocally put the Limestone County Board of Education on notice; the violation of Employment and labor laws which prohibits discrimination against faculty, staff, and students will NOT be tolerated. Disparities in education for students in this County School system will NOT be tolerated.  The discrimination, defaming, and harassment of employees will NOT be tolerated.  This culture of systematic racism in hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and beyond will NOT be tolerated.

We are calling on this entire Community to rise up and stand with us.
