(WAFF) - The electrical grid is a complex system that keeps cities, businesses and homes powered across the country.

The lineman is the on-the-ground, or in-the-air, worker that strives to keep that system up and running.

April 18 is National Lineman Appreciation Day. The designation was given by the U.S. Senate in a 2013 Resolution.

A recent post from the Tennessee Valley Authority, which services North Alabama, shows lineworkers using a helicopter to perform maintenance on various towers.

There are more than 115,000 linemen in the United States according to research from Northwest Lineman College.

Those workers service over 9 million miles of wire.
