(WAFF) - A bus route to Calhoun Community College's main campus and other experimental routes could be added to the North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments Regional Transit Agency service.

Transit Agency Director Robby Cantrell said he wants to create efficiencies and improve the service as part of a five-year plan for the agency, which serves Morgan and Lawrence counties.

"We want to take some ideas and test them out," Cantrell said. "We're in the process of putting together grant applications for two Alabama Department of Transportation programs."

NARCOG took over the Morgan County Area Transportation Service on Oct. 1. The service, which operates on an annual budget of close to $1.5 million, receives $348,000 from three local governments and three agencies.

The Morgan County Commission is the largest supporter at $220,000. The city of Decatur allocates $150,000, and Lawrence County gives $50,000.
