HARTSELLE, AL (WAFF) - Ninety students with Hartselle High School's marching band will be departing for Orlando this evening. The band will travel in two charter buses overnight and arrive at Walt Disney World tomorrow morning. They will spend the day at Magic Kingdom, where they will later march in the Disney Wishes Festival of Fantasy Parade Thursday evening.
Randall Key, director of bands for Hartselle City Schools, says the high school band takes a trip every four years and the middle school takes a separate trip. The high school band's most recent trip was marching in Philadelphia's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Fundraising events for the trip have been hosted throughout the school year. They've sold cookie dough, apparel, strawberries, and knife sets.
Key tells us he has an outstanding group of students.
"They've excelled in everything from their competitions to community service projects. We just had state music performance assessments about a week or two ago and they had to turn right around and get ready for a parade. They've been very successful," he said.
The band has made straight superiors at their state music performance assessments for thirteen consecutive years now.
After all the hard work the students have put in, they will naturally have some fun before leaving Disney World. They'll travel to Epcot on Friday and visit Animal Kingdom and Universal Studios on Saturday.
"I look forward to traveling with the group, because their academically sound and just good quality citizens. Their work ethic and their behavior allows me to have a good time with them. We're really looking forward to it," said Key.
