Mother, young daughter killed in separate accidents within hour

DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Valley Head police confirm a mother and her young daughter were killed in separate vehicle wrecks Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, the mother collided with another vehicle on Alabama 117 in the middle of Valley Head at about 3 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified her as 39-year-old Julia Yates Patterson of Valley Head

Police say the mother was driving and was the only one in her vehicle.

Two people in the other vehicle were transported to Erlanger Hospital.

According to Valley Head police, Patterson's young daughter was hit by a vehicle while out in the street about a half-hour later. This happened on Alabama 117 just north of Mentone near the Georgia state line.

The girl was also pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner identified her as 8-year-old Libby Patterson.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating.
