Marshall County's pet Chipathon set for April

MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - The Marshall County Animal Control is urging residents in that county to get their dogs microchipped. It's a promotion coming up next month and known as the Chipathon.

Animal control officials say they started the Chipathon last year. But what prompted it was they were surprised just how many dogs became lost from their owners during the April 2011 tornadoes.

Whether it's Scrappy-Doo or your pet, if they get lost and their tags fall off, how is someone supposed to know who they belong to? That is, unless you have your dog microchipped.

Marshall County Animal Control officer Kevin Hooks said the entire month of April is designated as the time of the Chipathon.

Area vets such as Lake Guntersville Veterinary Services in the Pet Depot in Guntersville, as well as others across the area, will be offering to insert chips in pets at reduced rates.

Hooks said he takes in about 500 dogs a year.

"On the average, there's only four or five that have chips, so the percentage of a chipped animal is very low. But we hope with the Chipathons that we're running each year, that the number of chipped animals will increase," said Hooks.

If a dog is chipped, Hooks said a quick scan by him or any vet will reveal the owner's information so they can be contacted.

Chipathon runs from April 1 through the end of the month.
