Jackson County man found guilty in fatal DUI hit-and-run

JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A Jackson County man was found guilty in a fatal drunk driving crash.

Prosecutors say Colton Cain Hart struck and killed 87-year-old Ed Jack Cooper while walking alongside County Road 93 near Bryant on April 3, 2015. Cooper died at the scene.

Prosecutors say Hart was under the influence at the time and fled the scene.

Prosecutors were seeking a manslaughter conviction. They didn't get it but he was found guilty of two felonies. The jury found Hart guilty of criminally negligent homicide while under the influence, making it a felony. He was also found guilty of felony leaving the scene of an accident.

Hart showed no emotion when the verdict was handed down at about 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Hart faces up to 10 years on each of the two convictions. The judge has asked a report containing Hart's criminal history be done before imposing sentence.

Hart was released on bond pending sentencing.

No sentencing date has been set.
