Accused meth dealer crashes into apartment fleeing Decatur police

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - A short police pursuit ended with a building crash and a man in jail on Wednesday.

Decatur police were investigating methamphetamine sales during the months of August and September. During that time, they determined that DeAngelo Lee Melendez, 23, sold a quantity of ice. A warrant was obtained against him for distribution of a controlled substance.

Police say Melendez was located on Bluebird Lane Southwest on Wednesday. Officers say as they attempted to stop him so they could serve the felony warrant, he led them on a vehicle pursuit. Melendez threw ice out of the car window during the pursuit, according to police.

The pursuit ended at Lakeview Apartments at 3120 Sumac Rd. Police say Melendez exited his vehicle while it was still in motion, causing the vehicle to crash into an occupied apartment.

After a brief foot pursuit, Melendez was taken into custody without further incident. Police say he was found to be in possession of nearly an ounce of ice as well as marijuana, drug sale paraphernalia and a loaded firearm.

Melendez was charged with distribution of a controlled substance, unlawful possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, carrying a pistol without a permit, second-degree possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, attempting to flee or elude and tampering with physical evidence. He was transported to the Decatur City Jail and processed in without incident.

Investigators asked the judge for a higher bond because of Melendez's criminal history and the facts of this case. Police say he will later be transferred to the Morgan County Jail in lieu of a $32,500.00 bond.

After Melendez's bond is satisfied through the Morgan County Jail, he will be transferred to Iroquois County, Illinois for an outstanding felony warrant for receiving/possession of a stolen vehicle.
