MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) - The U.S. Supreme Court. has issued a stay of execution Thursday night for Alabama death row inmate Thomas Douglas Arthur. The stay is pending further order by the court.
Arthur's was scheduled to die at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore at 6 p.m. Thursday. The execution was delayed for more than three hours while the Supreme Court reviewed an appeal filed earlier Thursday.
This is the seventh time Arthur's execution has been delayed.
Gov. Robert Bentley previously said he won't halt Arthur's execution.
Arthur was convicted for the 1982 murder-for-hire of Muscle Shoals businessman Troy Wicker.
His execution has been delayed multiple times. He requested a stay while he challenged the state's lethal injection procedure.
