Crash into building kills suspected beer thief fleeing police in Fort Payne

FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) - A man is dead after police say he crashed his car into a building after robbing the South End Market on Gault Avenue  early Tuesday in Fort Payne.

Police say Joshua Christian Grant, 25, walked into the store with a hammer shortly before 4:45 a.m. The store was open for business at the time.

Officers say Grant smashed a beverage cooler door and stole a six-pack of beer. He fled north on Gault Avenue in a vehicle.

Police say they noticed Grant traveling at a high rate of speed near 6th Avenue. He struck an aluminum light in front of the Fort Payne Fire Station #2 then continued across the parking lot.

Police say Grant then struck a small curb, which sent his vehicle airborne into the side of the old Quinn building.

Grant was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating this incident.
