(WAFF) - The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals has dismissed the appeal of an Iranian man on death row.
Mohammad Sharifi was convicted of capital murder in 2005 in the shooting deaths of his estranged wife, Sarah Kay Smith Sharifi, and their friend, Derrick Brown. Sharifi was sentenced to die by a jury vote of 10-2. According to court records.
Sharifi filed an appeal in 2009 citing several claims, including ineffective assistance of counsel.
He has since been granted new counsels multiple times, but his conviction was upheld.
Sharifi also wrote numerous letters proclaiming his innocence to the Madison County judge who convicted him. Judge Donna Pate ordered his letters to be forwarded to his attorney rather than her.
Sharifi's initial trial underwent numerous delays because of language barriers stemming from his native language of Farsi.
