Arrest made in Decatur bank robbery

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Decatur police have caught the man they say robbed Bank Independent at 2606 U.S. 31 Monday afternoon.

Employees said the suspect grabbed an undetermined amount of cash and ran out of the building at about 3:30 p.m.

Police got a description of the suspect. They also released a surveillance image.

Police found a man fitting his description at Hardee's on U.S. 31 South. A K-9 unit also tracked from the bank straight to Fails, who was with the officer who found him.

The suspect was identified as Melvin Lloyd Fails, 52. Police say he video surveillance clearly identified him as the suspect.

During the investigation, police found out Fails is also suspected in a robbery at Bank Independent at 1425 Beltline Rd. from July 25.

Fails was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree robbery.

Bond has not yet been set.
