Funeral for local civil rights icon Dr. Sonnie Hereford III

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Many people in Huntsville will pay their respects to civil rights legend  Dr. Sonnie Hereford on Tuesday.

He died last week at the age 85 after battling cancer.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Progressive Union Baptist Church on Oakwood Ave. the funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m.

Family members tell us eulogies will be given by Dr. Hereford's son, Sonnie IV, former UAH professor Dr. Jack Ellis and political science professor Dr. Waymon Burke.

After Hereford's funeral we're told his procession will pass by the Huntsville City school named after him on Barbara Drive.

Hereford is the man who broke the color barrier in Alabama schools when he took his son to a previously all-white school in Huntsville in 1963.
