DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - A memorial service was held in Decatur Saturday for two girls shot to death by their mother in Texas last week. Their mother, Christy Sheats, was then shot and killed by police.
The family had ties to Morgan and Lawrence counties. Christy and her surviving husband Jason Sheats' 17-year-old daughter Madison was born in Cullman and 22-year old Taylor Sheats was born in Huntsville. Both girls were buried at Limestone Memorial Gardens Saturday.
Their parents both went to high school in the area. Jason spoke to his former classmates from East Lawrence High at the service.
One classmate said Jason's spirit has been "inspiring" during an unthinkably tragic time.
"He said, 'If you have loved ones, tell them you love them every day and give them a hug because you never know it might be your last day.' He said one thing with his children he knows he has peace with, is that he loved his kids. His kids knew that he loved him, and his kids loved him. And he showed
them and kissed them and loved him every day. That shows a lot," former classmate Marsha Hill said.
East Lawrence High School's class of 1989 gathered and made an 89 out of roses for Jason.
Marsha Hill said a Go Fund Me page they created has raised thousands of dollars for Sheats.
Hill hasn't seen Jason since graduation and said it was nice to catch up, but wishes it didn't have to be under those circumstances.
"It was a sad day, but as a class, we came together for Jason," Hill said. "And he appreciated that. And that's what we do as a class of ELHS 1989. We support each other. When one hurts, we all hurt," she said.
It's unknown at this time where Christy's funeral will be held or if it will take place in Alabama.
