ATHENS, AL (WAFF) - Athens Police Department honored their fallen officers during a law enforcement memorial on Thursday at 5 p.m.

A wreath was placed on the Limestone County Courthouse lawn as several family, friends and their fellow law enforcement officers paid their respects to officers killed in the line of duty.

Among those present were the family members of Sgt. Larry Russell and Officer Tony Mims who died while serving the department in January 2004.

This week marks National Police Week which was established to remember and celebrate the lives of fallen officers nationwide.
