Civil rights pioneer tours elementary school

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Sonnie Hereford Elementary School was toured by a very special visitor.

Dr. Sonnie Hereford,III, tour the school that is named after in his honor along with his family this past week.

They viewed the construction progress of the 83,000 square foot school.

The school will have the latest technology and security features when it opens.

The campus will also have an outdoor classroom designed by the Alabama Wildlife Federation.

A ribbon cutting is planned for late June and the campus will open in August of this year.

Dr. Hereford said he was just overwhelmed with everything he saw in the new building.

Dr. Hereford was a key leader in the local civil rights movement in the 1960s that led to the peaceful integration of public facilities in Huntsville.
