DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Eyewitnesses said several gunmen fired dozens of shots in southeast Decatur Tuesday afternoon.
One man said it sounded like a war zone firefight. Residents, who did not want their identities revealed out of fear of retribution, said at least ten males, that appeared to be in two groups, fired at each other as they ran several blocks down 18th Avenue Southeast, at times in between residences.
Decatur Police confirmed that they arrested a male suspect after he ran and went underneath a house on Chestnut Street. Police only confirmed that he had outstanding warrants. Several officers scoured the area in patrol cars and on foot.
Several witnesses said that just before 2:30 p.m., in the East Acres apartments complex, at least ten males began firing at each other in the East Acres Apartments housing complex, kept firing as they ran for several blocks, then turned on to Chestnut Street.
People on Chestnut Street said they saw several of them run onto 19th Avenue Southeast and then out of their sight. Witnesses said the incident started next to the Community Action Partnership Head Start with children just having been let out.
