(WAFF) - Two students in the nation were selected to join National Geographic crews on an adventure this summer and one of them comes out of Bob Jones High School right here in Madison County.

Ethan Smyth had no idea why he was sitting in an assembly Monday morning at school, but he suspected something was up when his parents and a few family members from Wales walked in.

"I started to figure it out before they said my name, but when they said it I almost couldn't stand up I couldn't feel my leg, but I don't know I did, and I'm excited I'm thrilled," said Smyth.

Madison Mayor Troy Trulock was part of the whole setup to surprise Smyth and honor his outstanding achievement.

"It just shows the caliber of teachers, and principals, the superintendent, our school board members and our students," said Trulock. "I mean they just do amazing things that just continue to evolve into great things so to have Ethan, Ethan Smyth, as two in the nation today, was just outstanding."

Smyth will spend 20 days in Peru this summer along with another U.S. student from Southside Alabama Latin American students and another student from Southside Alabama thanks to AT&T teaming up with National Geographic.
