Former coach placed cameras in athletic rooms, bathroom
MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - David Barrow, the former Guntersville girls' soccer coach who pleaded guilty to human trafficking charges in Madison County, appeared in a Marshall County courtroom on Monday to enter a plea on charges of producing porn with minors.
Barrow pleaded guilty to two counts of that offense around 10:30 a.m. He was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison.
He was originally facing 27 charges, however, 23 counts of production of obscene matter and one count each of child porn possession and aggravated criminal surveillance were dismissed.
The judge asked Barrow if he thought the plea was in his best interest.
"If I say no to that, would it mess things up?" Barrow replied, before the judge gave him and his attorney a break to talk.
When he returned, and the judge asked Barrow if he was guilty, Barrow paused and said "Yes."
The judge asked Barrow to explain what he did. Barrow replied that he used cameras at the Guntersville High School soccer fields in a multipurpose room, placing them on the wall and in toilet areas.
Barrow's attorney said they understand there was intentional filming of nudity.
Prosecutor Jennifer Bray said there were 14 victims they were able to identify and others they could not.
"He will be 88 years old before he is able to get out of prison, if he even lives that long," said Bray. "I think what we did today was put a predator that was in our community, in our school, in our soccer team - we were able to put a predator behind bars for essentially the rest of his life today."
Barrow was arrested at a soccer tournament in Huntsville in 2014. Investigators said Barrow brought two girls to a home, took nude photos of the minors, and touched them inappropriately.
Barrow and an accomplice, Kristian Griffin, pleaded guilty to trafficking charges in Madison County last week. Barrow was sentenced to serve two 30-year-sentences concurrently in that case.
His sentence from Marshall County will also run concurrently. He will be transferred to the state prison system to serve out those sentences.
