Police: Decatur teacher arrested for sexual relationships with students

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Decatur police say a Decatur High School teacher was arrested, accused of having sexual relationships with two students.

Detectives with the Decatur Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit opened an investigation on Carrie Cabri Witt last Thursday after receiving information of Witt allegedly being in a relationship with a student.

Detectives interviewed numerous people. They then found out there was a second victim in the case.

Monday, detectives made contact with Witt at her home. She was transported to the Decatur Police Department for an interview.

At the conclusion of the interview, Witt was placed under arrest for two counts of a state employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19.

Witt was booked into the Decatur City Jail and later transferred to the Morgan County Jail. She was released on a $10,000 bond.

Witt teaches history, psychology, government and economics. She is also the junior-varsity cheerleader coach and the varsity girls' golf coach, according to the school's website.

We reached out to Decatur City Schools for their reaction. Superintendent Ed Nichols released the following statement:

We were informed this afternoon that one of our teachers was arrested, and we're looking into situation now. Standard procedure is to place a teacher on administrative leave while investigation is ongoing. We're waiting on further details from Decatur Police Department and will fully cooperate with their investigation.

Court documents show that Witt is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 21.
