Decatur sailor to be commissioned as Navy Civil Engineer Corps officer

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - A Decatur naval officer will soon be commissioned in the U.S. Navy's Civil Engineer Corps.

Chief William J. Dean has served in the Navy for 10 years as a utilitiesman. He is a 1998 Alcorn Central High School graduate and a 2003 UNA graduate.

He currently serves at Navy Recruiting District Nashville as the Lead Naval Special Warfare/Naval Special Operations Scout for the district, where he conducts physical screenings, swim clinics, and mentors hopefuls for the Special Warfare and Special Operations programs, including the Navy SEAL program.

Chief Dean will be commissioned as a United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps Officer in October of this year, prior to attending the Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer Academy in Newport, Rhode Island.

"I am very thankful for this milestone in my Naval career," said Dean. " I've had excellent leaders and mentors over the years.  I've had the privilege of leading outstanding Seabees and Sailors who have worked very hard to accomplish the mission, no matter how big or small.  Without the support from all of the above, along with the support of my family, I would not have reached this milestone.

"I look forward to the added responsibilities and challenges that come with being a CEC Officer," he added. "I'm excited about what the future holds and I look forward to having the opportunity to mentor others applying for this program in the future."

"Chief William Dean's hard work and devotion to duty has earned him another great opportunity to serve in a capacity of greater responsibility in the United States Navy, and I have no doubt that he will accomplish much more in this new responsibility. Nothing makes me happier than to see hard working and enthusiastic individuals accomplishing their goals and being recognized by the Navy for their excellent work," said Lt. Seth Gay, Division Officer.

Chief Dean's previous awards and recognitions include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, NATO Medal, Expert Rifleman Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbons (3), and Sharpshooter Pistol Ribbon.

In 2014, Chief Dean was selected as Navy Recruiting District Nashville's Naval Special Warfare/Naval Special Operations "Recruiter of the Year".
