SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) - A first alert right now about a civil rights violation lawsuit filed against the city of Sheffield.
The lawsuit states a former police officer sprayed an unarmed man with chemical spray and tased him in the back.
The man says the fall to the ground knocked him out for several minutes.
The man who filed the lawsuit was initially charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication, but the state dropped those charges because the arresting officer was no longer employed with the city.
The officer accused of spraying the man and tasing him is Bobby Inman.
The city suspended him after this incident and the police chief recommended termination.
The city of Sheffield then reached a deal with Inman and allowed him to resign.
