MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A former Madison County school resource officer has been indicted on two charges for sex with a minor.
Jerome Heard, 41, was indicted on charges of a school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 and first-degree sodomy.
According to Madison County Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Salomonsky, Heard allegedly had sexual contact with a 16-year-old girl during the 2012-2013 school year. The relationship between Heard and the minor lasted anywhere from six months to a year.
Heard turned himself into the Madison County Detention Facility Friday evening and posted $70,000 bond. He was then released. Deputies say Heard is cooperating with the investigation.
The sheriff's department was first alerted to the situation from an anonymous tip via a Facebook message in June 2015. Once allegations were discovered, Heard was removed from having any contact at Madison County Schools and placed on an alternative assignment.
"The Madison County School System is cooperating fully with the Madison County Sheriff's Office in the investigation of one of its former school resource officers," said John Southerland, Director of Development and Communication for Madison County Schools. "We are committed to helping the Sheriff's Office as part of our joint commitment to ensure the safety and security of our students."
His previous assignments were at Sparkman High School during the 2012-2013 school year, Monrovia Middle School in the 2013-2014 school year, and Meridianville Middle School at the start of the 2015 school year.
The sheriff's office is asking for the public's help in additional information. If anyone would like to come forward to speak with an investigator, call (256) 533-8820.
Heard had been employed with the sheriff's office since 2009. He resigned on January 4, 2016, and has since moved out-of-state. He was also a former Huntsville police officer. He served with them from 2003-2007.
