HARTSELLE, AL (WAFF) - Hartselle Mayor Don Hall resigned, effective Nov. 30, during a special meeting with the city council on Friday.

City councilman said Hall asked for an indefinite leave of absence, which is the reason the meeting was called. That request was denied by the city council.

The mayor then asked for the council to accept his resignation, effective Nov. 30 at 11:59 p.m. He asked the council to grant him a leave of absence until the resignation date, which the council accepted. Hall will be paid his regular salary for the next three months.

City Council President Bill Smelser was named the interim mayor for the community.

At the beginning of the meeting, the city council asked for people to pray for Hall and his wife because of the Ashley Madison issue, but didn't give further details. Hall's name was also recently found on the leaked Ashley Madison list. Names contained on the list are not confirmed, and the mayor denied having an account.

Hall was arrested in 2014 on DUI charges. Alabama state troopers said they pulled him over in September of 2014 during a routine traffic stop when he failed a road side sobriety test.
