MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A Madison County community has rallied in support of a family dealing with the grief of multiple tragedies.
A benefit was held Saturday at Riverton Elementary School. Riverton student Clayton Chambers was killed in an Aug. 4 house fire, along with three other family members and an unborn child.
Three hair salons banded together in asking the community to donate clothing and household items for the sale, with all profits going directly to the family.
"My son actually went to school with [Clayton]," said yard sale organizer Jessica Joiner. "They played sports a few years ago together. In this community - we are such a small community - everyone comes together, and everyone knows everybody. We just wanted to do something to help out the family."
The yard sale portion of the benefit raised more than $11,000. When combined the rest of the benefit's efforts, the community collected more than $23,000 to aid the family.
Services for Clayton Chambers, Kristen Henderson, Jean Smallwood and Eli Sokolowski are scheduled for Aug. 22.
