Vietnam veteran becomes newest Huntsville graduate

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A Vietnam Veteran who calls the Tennessee Valley home is officially a high school graduate.

Carlene Cole was awarded a high school diploma from Huntsville City Schools on Tuesday evening.

The presentation took place at the beginning of the district's board meeting.

Cole left school in 1968 to join the Marine Corps.

During his third tour of duty, his unit came under attack and his leg was severely injured.

"I thought I was not going to make it," Cole recalled. "I stayed unconscious about three months in the hospital, and after that, I woke up."

"He saw a lot of his fellow comrades pass and he saved a few of his comrades while he was there," said Carlene's son, Elias. "He has had a long, good life."

Cole says it feels great to get his diploma.

Other awards he's earned include a Purple Heart, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.
